THE PROJECT IN SUMMARY
Artistic workshops with paraplegics and quadriplegics who are patients at the Spinal Unit of the Niguarda Cà Grande hospital in Milan.
THE PROJECT IN DETAIL
Objectives
Integrating artistic expression into the care of paraplegics and quadriplegics hospitalized in the Spinal Unit of the Ospedale Niguarda Cà Granda of Milan.
Beneficiairies
Approximately 105 people with spinal cord injuries (paraplegics and quadriplegics) mostly between the ages of 18 and 30 who are patients or frequent the Day Hospital of the Spinal Unit, and people who have been discharged and are back at home. On average, a dozen people visit the workshops every day.
Activities
Spazio Vita Niguarda organizes workshops for music, painting, ceramics and woodcutting at the Spinal Unit to give people the freedom to choose the artistic form most suitable to their personalities, abilities and habits. The project is run by a team of professional artists, each specialized in an artistic form but capable of working in other mediums. Patients can go to the workshops at any hour and as often as they like; the doors are always open. The common denominator of all artistic activities is sharing. Facing life’s difficulties alone can be frightening and make them seem bigger but having people beside you can give great strength. In music, pens, paints and clay people can escape from the hospital dimension and free their minds from worries and frustrations, sharing their thoughts and fears concerning their physical rehabilitation, daily life and those first, timid projects for the future.
In 2013 the Association was able to purchase, thanks to support from AMI, a Soundbeam®: an electronic instrument with ultrasound sensors and cutting edge equipment that anybody can use to make music, both individually and as a group. It allows all patients to be protagonists and “make music together”
